Ravindra Jadeja: What is the cause for a very promising player in the T20 format to sit at home twiddling his thumbs, when the world’s most exciting T20 tournament is going on? Who is responsible for Ravindra Jadeja’s current situation? Was it plain greed on the part of Jadeja, temptation to earn a few more bucks or is it much more than that? Could it not be the fault of the Mumbai Indians management who may have instigated Jadeja to cross the thin line of professional ethics? Was the Rajasthan Royals management trying to exploit a performing cricketer by underpaying him, making him feel insecure by not confirming his place in the team and then crying foul when he lost patience and decided to try new avenues ? Has the BCCI penalized him more harshly than the situation warrants? A ban for a couple of matches, a hefty fine would have taught him a lesson. A ban for the entire tournament for a budding T20 player may jeopardize his future in this format of the game. Let’s assume that the BCCI is honest when it says that it did not want to set a bad precedent. But would a similar precedent have been set if the player involved had been senior or influential? Then, why was the Mumbai Indians franchise let off with a warning? They too deserved and could afford a harsher punishment. They may have convinced the gullible Jadeja that he was committing no wrong. Here, the BCCI did not seem to have any worries of precedent setting. This episode is a lesson for players especially the younger lot that when it comes to rules and regulations, they should strictly go by the book. Whatever be the motive or reason for digressing, they would be the losers. And more importantly, when the rules are not clear, … [Read more...]

While the Super Kings, after an up-and-down are on eight points from nine games. The Mumbai Indians will play to confirm semi-final berth with this win. Chennai Super Kings: The Super Kings are involved in a real scrap for a semi final place but back to back wins have revived their campaign. They have four wins and five defeats so far and key games coming up against Deccan Chargers and the Knight Riders who are also in the hunt. They cannot afford to lose any other games now onward though they do have a healthy net run rate which could well count in their favour. Vijay is fast becoming a star of the tournament and currently tops the Super Kings run scoring charts. With the ball it’s a different story although Doug Bollinger performed really well in his first game of the tournament against the Royals with two wickets for fifteen runs, and all this despite the visitors making an excellent fist of what would have been a record run chase. Mumbai Indians: With seven wins and one defeat, the Mumbai Indians are pretty much assured of a semi final place. They have been ruthless throughout the tournament, their only blemish being a defeat to the Royal Challengers. All departments are functioning as the coaching staff would like and they deserve to be favourites to win the tournament. Tendulkar has scored four half-centuries in eight games with a highest of 72 and a strike-rate of 140.72, besides displaying native shrewdness in team selections and strategies. Tendulkar’s performance not just as a batsman, but also as an inspirational leader who has … [Read more...]

IPL Preview: Mumbai Vs Deccan Chargers
Deccan Chargers need to quickly rediscover their momentum against table toppers Mumbai Indians in the teams' second leg clash of the Indian Premier League on Saturday. With six wins from their first seven games and a current winning streak of four, Mumbai are a couple of games clear at the top of the table. Mumbai have been unstoppable and have emerged as the single strongest side thus far, whereas Deccan has had to face some harsh realities of life, lying almost at the bottom of the pile. Venue and Conditions: The Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai is the colonial setting for the second meeting of the Mumbai Indians and the Deccan Chargers this week. No team batting first has yet come close to matching the 212-6 Mumbai reached in the first of the five IPL 2010 matches played here so far. The Indian Host: Led from the front by the evergreen Little Master, the Indians have won every game save the one blemish against the Royal Challengers of Bangalore, and a very strongly positioned to be the first team to qualify for the semis There hasn't been any over-aggressive big hitting from the little man; mere deft touches and field piercings have done the job for him, and that too with a very healthy strike rate of 140. Local players like Saurabh Tiwary, Ambati Rayudu and Shikhar Dhawan have also done a great job playing around him. West Indian allrounder duo Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo complete a most formidable batting lineup and though they have not yet really come to the party, it is only a matter of time before the dangerous duo explodes. Lasith Malinga, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan feature very high in the list of top wicket-takers, and with very impressive economy rates as well. Ryan McLaren, Bravo and … [Read more...]
Match Preview: Kings Punjab Vs Mumbai Indians
It's top versus bottom in the Indian Premier League on Tuesday as the Mumbai Indians welcome a beleaguered Kings XI Punjab side to the Brabourne Stadium. The Mumbai Indians are top of the IPL log whilst Kings XI Punjab are bottom and home side are favorites. The Kings XI have won just 1 game from 6, and find themselves all alone at the bottom of the league with just 2 points to their name, that too coming from a game where they were outplayed for 30 of the 40 overs. Mumbai in contrast are the complete opposites of Punjab, winning 5 of their 6 games so far and sitting pretty on their lonesome at the top of the league with 10 points. They will be hoping to hit the half-way stage of the tournament with the added cushion of another two points, and the knowledge that a semi-final spot is pretty much in the bag. The Hosts: Tendulkar is leading from the front and he is just behind Jacques Kallis in the leading run scorer chart, averaging 60.60 at a strike rate of 145. The 303 runs Tendulkar has scored so far puts him way ahead of his team mates, Tiwary is second on the Mumbai batting list and has looked very useful at times but although Harbhajan Singh crashed a rapid 49 at the weekend, Tendulkar is the glue that holds the batting together. Sachin’s two lowest scores were 17 against the Royals (where Mumbai scraped home) and 25 against RCB (where they suffered their only defeat). If teams are to beat Mumbai in the IPL this year, they will need to adopt the Douglas Jardine style of thinking where his sole point of attack was how to counter Don Bradman. With the exception of Saurabh Tiwary, the rest of the Mumbai batting has failed to fire, however, such has been Sachin's contribution that they have not yet really needed to. … [Read more...]
IPL Match Preview: Hyderabad Vs Mumbai Indians
Venue and Conditions: Deccan take on Mumbai at home but it will feel like an away game. It is important to note that this match is being played at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai, not the Brabourne stadium. Only one game has been played there so far; Kolkata beating Deccan by 11 runs having posted 161. Team Performance: Deccans are well equipped to inflict a second defeat on Mumbai. Thanks to their disciplined bowling they are one of the few sides who can be confident of restricting a start-studded batting line-up. Just like Bangalore frustrated the Indians in their only defeat so far, Adam Gilchrist's men could do a similar job. They have managed it three times before in IPL. Chaminda Vaas is the key man for Deccan. With an economy rate of 6.66 - one of the best of the tournament - he and opening partner RP Singh must keep Sachin Tendulkar quiet. The Indians this year are a well-oiled unit who has been led from the front by Tendulkar, himself in stupendous form. In the previous two games Tendulkar has carried his bat through and that is indication enough of what the Chargers' bowlers should expect. Mumbai's Sanath Jayasuriya missed out in the victory over Chennai as Ryan McLaren's medium pacers were preferred. He only went for five an over so should keep his place. Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo continue in the middle order meaning JP Duminy will have to warm the bench. Mumbai's bowlers have been on target right through with Zaheer Khan, Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh all among the wickets. The Chargers' running between the wickets has also been dicey and the calling for runs must improve. The Chargers who had won three of their five games produced an ugly performance against … [Read more...]
March 20 matches preview

Author: Mona Gupta, New Delhi IPL 2010 Matches Preview: 20th March: Saturday’s double header in the IPL-3 T20 comes from Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The Rajasthan Royals will face a big test against the Dada’s Knight Rider while the Royal Challengers take on Mumbai Indians. Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders: Shane Warne and his Rajasthan Royals have lost all three of their matches so far and things may not get any easier when they take on the Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday. How the Royals need a change in fortune. They narrowly lost their opening game of IPL 3 but things have gone from bad to worse on and off the field since then. First the news of key players Graeme Smith and Dimitri Mascarenhas being ruled out of the rest of the tournament through injury, a defeat at home to Delhi, and then a real hammering in Bangalore on Thursday. Bottom of the log, the Royals look to set for a struggle and their 92 all out against RCB on what has been a decent batting track was the lowest score of the tournament so far. By contrast, the Knight Riders won their first two matches although they were comfortably beaten by Chennai in their most recent game. Wins over the Deccan Chargers and the Royal Challengers were achieved on merit and despite the loss to the Super Kings the Knight Riders look set to give things a real go this time around. Also in their favour, Chris Gayle could now be available for selection for KKR and his presence alone would give the team even more momentum to build on what has largely been a promising start. Brendon McCullum is still with the Black Caps and will not be available until the test series against Australia finishes. The Verdict: I’m in the Knight Riders camp … [Read more...]
