IPL Team: Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings is the Chennai based franchise of the Indian Premier League. The team is led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni and coached by Stephen Fleming. The M. A. Chidambaram Stadium is the Super Kings' home ground. The franchise is currently owned by India Cements, who paid US$91 million to acquire the rights to the franchise for 10 years in 2008. N. Srinivasan, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of India Cements Ltd., is the defacto owner of the Chennai Super Kings, by means of his position within the company. He is also the Secretary of the BCCI. The name Chennai Super Kings draws on the history of rulers emerging from this region. It should also be noted that the ICL named their Chennai franchise Chennai Superstars a year prior to the formation of the Super Kings. Fearless rulers have been an intrinsic part of Tamil History. The reign of the Chera, Chola, Pandya and Pallava dynasties represented the Golden Era of Tamil Culture. The kings from their dynasties, fearless warriors in their own right have fought long and hard to establish the supremacy of Tamil rule and expand the Tamil kingdom within the subcontinent and abroad. It is from this rich heritage that the name "Chennai Super Kings" draws its inspiration. It is only natural that the modern-day warriors in the sporting arena would try and replicate the exploits of their ancestors. The addition of the word "Super" gives the name a young and contemporary feel, which is in keeping with the game format. The Twenty20 as a cricketing format is all about enhanced drama and speed. The format has no scope for half measures, or anything less than a full-spirited war. In a similar fashion, given the mind-space that the word "Super" occupies in the Tamil imagination, it enhances the … [Read more...]

Deccan Chargers: Team Analysis:Author: Mona Gupta Deccan Chargers also called as DC is a franchise that represents the city of Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. They are the current holders of the IPL Trophy, winning the second season held in South Africa in 2009. From 2009, the team is led by Adam Gilchrist and coached by Darren Lehmann, both former Australian Test & One-Day Cricketers. They finished last in the first season of the IPL, but emerged as the champions in the second by winning it. The Deccan Chargers franchise is owned by Deccan Chronicle. The media group acquired the franchise from IPL for $107 million on January 24, 2008. Later, another media group, Group M India picked up a 20% stake in the franchise. The team's name reflects the association with the Deccan Chronicle newspaper, which in turn derives its name from the Deccan plateau that makes up the majority of the southern portion of the Indian peninsula. The Chargers logo is a charging bull. From the 2009 season, the team changed the color of the jersey (from beige and black to sparkling silver and blue) and the logo (from gold and red to white and blue). There is no Icon Player for the team as the former captain V.V.S. Laxman rejected the offer to be an icon player in order to give a chance to the younger players. With the below-par performance in the inaugural season and finishing at the bottom, Deccan staged an inspired comeback in 2009 by winning the second IPL season. After having a undefeated run in the initial league stage, the team suffered minor setbacks by losing some close matches. But the return of Andrew Symonds, Rohit Sharma regaining form and the continuing exuberance of captain Adam Gilchrist bolstered … [Read more...]

The team is captained by Gautam Gambhir. During the franchise auction for the Indian Premier League teams, Naresh Ganaparthi of GMR Group purchased the Delhi Daredevils for $84 million. Virender Sehwag has been accorded the icon player status in the Delhi team and was also the captain of the side during the first two seasons. However, he resigned and passed on the leadership to his opening partner Gautam Gambhir. The team also boasts international players such as AB de Villiers, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Paul Collingwood, David Warner and Andrew McDonald. The bowling attack includes international players Glenn McGrath (2008–09), Daniel Vettori, Farveez Maharoof and Dirk Nannes. The team also includes the Indian players like Dinesh Karthik, Amit Mishra and Vijaykumar Yomahesh.  Players’ Profile: Virender Sehwag: Sehwag's play is always soothing to eyes and makes up his lack of footwork with sweet timing. His aggressive style is cut out for One-dayers and Twenty20 cricket, but he is equally devastating in Tests. In modern cricket if there is one player, who can dictate bowlers at will, it has to be Sehwag. What makes him special is his carefree style of play. Whether he is on 96 or 196, he is never on the defensive mode. He will play his natural game and won't mind stepping out to get to his century or a double ton. Sehwag is the only Indian batsman to have two triple centuries in Test cricket. He also comes handy with his gentle off breaks and is well known for his ability to break partnerships. Major teams: India, Asia XI, Delhi, Delhi … [Read more...]

My failed IPL T20 Cricet Predictions

Indian Premier League has thrown up some unexpected results and I failed to predict them before the onset of IPL T20 tournament in my Indian Premier League blog. Some players surprised me with their superb performances while some are disappointed me.  What I failed to predict: 1. Rajasthan Royals: I thought that it may win one or two matches but what happened is exactly opposite. I underestimated team spirit and Shane Warne’s leadership. Rajasthan Royals made me fool before my readers. Thank you Royals!  2. Hyderabad Deccan Chargers: Absence of a great leader and selection politics is the reason behind their worst performance. Gilchrist may not know about all these politics but coach Robin Singh knows. Hyderabad has worst franchisee owners in the IPL.  3. Venugopala Rao: I am still unable to recover (positive surprise) from his stellar performances. As an Andhraite, I am happy to see his unbelievable transformation from Dravid like batting to “Sixers Rao”. Greg Chappell spotted immense talent in him but I thought he was a test player. He will surely serve for India in all formats of cricket. Who can forget his valiant knocks and useful bowling?  4. Muralidharan: I thought that he will among the top three wicket takers before the onset of IPL but he is still struggling to take a single wicket per match.  5. Mohammad Asif: I thought McGrath-Asif combination will become a nightmare for opposition. But Asif disappointed me and his Delhi team with his wayward bowling.  6. Sreesanth: He is simply sensational after “slapgate” episode. He needs to be nurtured carefully for Test cricket. I also underestimated Mohali leg spinner "Piyush Chawla".  7. Ricky … [Read more...]
